August Results

I had a break even August. I started with a $400 bankroll and ended with a $400 bankroll.  Last week I was down to $360. I was able to bring it back to $400 primarily playing SNGs.
I've had a rough time with SNGs lately and I decided to try something new. I concentrated on the game and tuned out the TV. My goal was to identify the players I can pick on and the ones that I needed to play carefully.
One SNG, I made a sick suckout. I shoved with 8's and was called by Aces. I hit my 8 on the river to win it.  After this, I had three points when my opponents thought I play way too loose and shoved me, hoping I would fold.  In all three cases, I called feeling that they had nothing and I was right all three times. I'm finding that to win I need to concentrate on the other players and then to understand your image at the table at that time and exploit that image.

World Series of Poker 2008

I haven’t been able to follow the WSOP this year, like I hoped I would.  I’ve been pretty busy and I just couldn’t swing a trip to Vegas this year.  I’m a little disappointed.  I’d love to play an event, but I know at this point in my career, I would just be throwing money away.  From the look of the results, a lot of pros were making final tables and winning bracelets, which to me says, I have to really bone up on the skills before making the attempt.

A few thoughts…

Congrats to Erick Lindgren, Daniel Negreanu and Barry Greenstein on winning bracelets.  Condolences to Phil Ivey for losing his bracelet bet.

Looks like the thrill of poker is not slowing down.  This years main event features 6,844 participants making it the second biggest tournament.  Positions Paid: 666. I’m sure they could have paid one more person.  Top prize is $9,119,517.  Yikes.  We’ll also have to wait until November to see who wins.  I kind of like the idea of postponing the final table.  The key here is execution. If done right this could be very entertaining television.

On a good run

The swings in poker are huge, but in low limit poker, getting back to the top after a big loss runs at a snails pace.

Now is the time for my May Update.  April was a tough month.  I stepped back into cash games and got my ash handed to me on a plate.  If you have a bad session, you can lose a lot.  I also went back to Pechanga and lost a lot of money there too.  Stupid river.  My bankroll dropped to almost $200 at that point.

This was a few weeks ago.  At this point, I was discouraged and I need to just concentrate on the game I play best.  No limit, sit and go’s.  Thank God.  I’ve been on quite a run.  I’m playing some of the best games that I’ve played in a long time. In a week, my $200 bankroll grew to $280 and now I’m at $310.  I think that’s my fastest rise in the $5 SNG.  If I can keep it up, I may graduate to $10.

This Month’s Success

My good run I can attribute to patience and solid play.  I’ve had a few games where I had a dominate chip lead near the bubble, but a lot of my wins came when I was short stacked with 5 players left.  I chose not to gamble and play correct short stack play.  Many times I saw players with more chip then me dump them off only to move into the money.

Speaking of solid play, I noticed I lost in the early stages when I decided to gamble or when I let someone push me into shoving.  I have to learn to let those hands go.

When playing solid, I can now handle losses better because when I got high into the money I either lost races or bad beats.

I’m feeling real good right now.  Now that I’ve said this, I’m going to lose.  Oh well.

FUNNY STORY

Today I was in a $2 turbo.  I was finally heads up with my opponent and we had the same chip stack.  The blinds were 400/800 I we both had around 6,500 chips each.

My internet goes out. After about 90 seconds of panic I’m back online and instead of being even, I’m down to 940 after an 800 big blind.  In just six hands, I won the SNG.  It was partial luck but it was also getting the other guy to call my big hands.  Here’s a brief look at the last six hands.

Hand 1:

Me (940) – Qh 9h

Him (12,560) – Kd 6s

After posting my 800 big blind, I shove with my list 140.  With Q9h, I figure I’m a coin toss, plus I can’t fold a queen.  Win with pair of Queens.

Hand 2 (blinds 500/1000):

Me (1,880) – 4s 5s

Him (11,620) – Folds

I would have had to shove here, figuring I had two live cards.  Fortunately he made the mistake of folding.  But then again, if he folds, I might have had a good chance to win if he puts me all-in.

Hand 3:

Me (2,280) – Tc Qh

Him (11,220) – Ks 6s

I’m first to act and of course I have to shove it all in.  With QTo I’m just hoping I have overs or he only has one.  He has a King and I’m in a coin toss.  That’s the minimum I hoped for.  I spike a ten on the river to win the hand.

Hand 4:

Me (4,560) – Qc 5h

Him (8,940) – 7s 4c

My opponent open shoves and I’m sensing this is a frustration shove.  I’ve got less than 5 big blinds, so I felt a queen high call was good and I was right.  He calls with a 7 high and I hit a queen on the flop.

Hand 5:

Me (9,120) – 10s 2s

Him (4,380) ???

I’m first to act and I fold.  I don’t need to double him up on the Doyle Brunson hand.  I know a lot of people who will play this because Doyle won both his WSOP championships on this hand.  I’ve learned the ten deuce only works for Doyle Brunson.  I muck my hand hoping for a better hand.

Hand 6:

Me (8,620) – Qs Qh

Him (4,880) – 7h Jc

If my opponent knows what’s good for him, he’s shoving with less than 5 big blinds.  With pocket queens I can’t risk letting this hand got with out trying to induce an all-in.  I’m first to act and I need to get him all in.  I limp hoping that he’s going to shove.  By limping I disguise the strength of my hand and I give my opponent a chance to commit or to bluff.  Both optimal situations.  The board misses my opponent and I come in first.

Never give up.

Poker and the Christian - The Response

I’ve written another article on Christian Poker Players.  I think is really hits more of the touchier points.  For example, how can you play a game that requires you to lie and use deceit to win? Also, how can you play against someone who is gambling away his mortgage payment or food of his children?

Please read the article and let me know what you think.

Luck or Skill?

Hey everyone,

As some of you know, I’m a member of PokerXFactor.com and they have this really cool feature where I can upload the hand histories from a tournament that I was in and I can review my play.  I was testing one of the features by uploading a SNG that I bubbled on.

It was a good game because I played a little more aggressive than I usually do, and I wanted to review the hands that I lost.  You can filter the view so only your losing hands show up (with the exception of when you folds the blinds).

It was interesting because I only lost two hands in that SNG.  It was the last two hands, where I lost races.  I won 16 hands and lost 2.

The situation was that I was on the bubble short stacks.

Hand 1 – I was on the button with QT and was called by pocket 6s.  Lost the race.

Hand 2 – Small blind with K-9 shoved and called by A-9.  Dominated.

I hate bubbling.

Moving Back Down

My brief stint on the top has brought me back down.  I’m back to grinding away at $5 SNG’s.  It was fun while it lasted.  Part of my problem was going back to limit and getting into level that were over my head.  I lost a lot of money playing $1/$2.  You know how slides go.  You grind you pay to the height if your game and then with a few big losses, you’re back down to the depths.  Grind is all I can do now.  Looks like I won’t be able to participate in the Pechanga Poker Championship next month.  Unless, I get lucky that is.

Cheers, Alan.

Limit Holdem Trip Report - Pechanga Casino 3/22/08

Limit Holdem Trip Report

Due to some personal changes in my life, my ability to play at a live casino is going to be difficult.  This past weekend was my last chance for a long time for me to play live.  I wanted to make my best of it.  Here's my trip report.

Details:

  • Pechanga
  • 3/22/2008
  • Game: $2/$4 limit
  • Buyin - $120
  • End Result - $120

As you can see I came away even.  In summary, I started great, played bad in the middle and played great at the end.  My goal was to win.  I didn't reach my goal, but I was able to get back to even pretty quickly.

THE GAME.  I've played at Peghanga for several years.  I love this casino, because I've won the most money here.  In fact, it's the only place that I have a winning record.  The main reason is because Pechanga is a tourist casino.  There are a lot of fish there.  I run into more people who like to gamble and plays a lot of hands.  A $2/$4 game at Pechanga is like playing a $.05/$.10 game online.  You can count on a large number of callers in many hands.

I describe players as Loose Passive.  It was not uncommon to have a lot of callers and see hands checked down to the end.  It's not uncommon to raise preflop and see a lot of callers.  The table is very loose pre-flop and passive post flop.

Post flop players like to chase.  They will chase flushes and worse yet, they will chase gut shot straight draws.

That's the players.  Now you have to take into consideration the house.  Pechanga takes a $5 rake from every pot.  That's a lot of money.  There are some mistake people make with this rake. I'll talk about this later.

My strategy was simple.  Play tight aggressive.  I need to have a narrow hand range and absolutely take advantage of position.

Let's talk preflop hand selection.  I can't play every hand.  If I play every hand, I'm going to run out of money quickly.  In all positions, I'm playing premium hands. In middle position, I'm playing hands that will get me a straight or a flush. In late position, I'm playing Ace and King suited.  I'm also folding trap hands when the table is aggressive.  I'm definitely folding A-7 in early position.  I'm also folding K-J in early position. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF POSITION.

I'm also playing aggressive. I want to raise whenever I can.  There are two reasons for this.  The first is you have to beat the rake.  If I have a hand worth playing, then I need a pot worth playing for. If the hand is unraised and there are 5 players in the hand, then there's only $5 in the pot.  In this case, unless I hit the flop, there's no point in going after the pot unless I believe everyone will fold. In a raised pot, there is now $15 in the pot.  Couple your raise with a good starting hand, you're on your way to winning.

The second reason for raising is to take control of the table. You've got to own the table because this allows to you control how much you can win and control how much you lose.  When you're control of the table, you have the opportunity to see free cards if you need to.  This can only be accomplished in late position. When you take control enough, you also have opportunities to steal pots.  I actually won about 4 pots on pure bluffs.  Just because I took the lead and could sell the fact that I had a hand.

I'm always betting.  If I'm in a hand that I have a chance to win, I'm always betting.  I'm checking if I really don't have a chance to win.  Why bet without the best hand?  First the weak table.  Here's a typical play.  There are 5 to 6 limpers.  The board is Q-8-7 with two hearts.  So there a straight draw and/or flush draw.  No one will ever fold the possibility of  getting top pair, the straight or flush.  But at the same time, they will not bet out their hand.  If no one bets the pot does not grow and if you hit your hand your not going to earn money.  I bet out because I have a descent chance to win and if I do hit the flop, I will earn alot of money.  Anywhere from $20 to $50 dollars on a big draw.  You may also be able to take the pot on the semi bluff as well.

On the other hand, you may actually have a great hand.  You will get paid off if you bet. There's no point in slowplaying, you'll get called.  You'll earn more extra big bets than if you were trying to be sneaky.

Let me end here for now.  I'll finish this discussion with some hands and some interesting play.

Movin' On Up

I know I haven’t written in a while.  I’m finally doing it and I feel it’s the right time.  I’m graduating from $5 SNG to $10 SNG.  That’s right, I’ve doubled my buyin.

I started the year off at $500 and I did not do so well in January and February.  I had bits of success and a lot of losses.  I started to journal my losses, so I know what my tendencies are.  I found that I lose most when I over play top pair.  I’m getting killed by the higher kicker and trips.

No I’m a little more disciplined.  I have to keep telling myself to fold a big bet on top pair.  I also have to be in a situation where I can concentrate.  I am now actually watching the action that is going on around me.

I also found that I’m grinding away too much at the $5 level.  I buy in for little only to win little.

This past week is the first week I have dedicated to $10 on Full Tilt.  Here’s a few things, I noticed; as you go up in a level, the player tend to be a little better.  In fact, they tend to play a little tighter.  It’s a little more easy to make moves.

Well, wish me luck.  I hope to do well.

2007 Poker Journey In Review

So, if you’re one of the very few who has been following my poker journey this year, here’s where we ended.

As a promise to my wife and proof that I’m not addicted to gambling, I made a pledge that I would start the year with $100.  If I lost it, I’m done with poker for the year.

So, on January 1, 2007 - $100

January 1, 2008 - $1,000

That’s right people, I turned one hundred dollars into one thousand.

I didn’t even think I would get this far.  Christmas was really draining on me because of my home-business.  I really didn’t have enough time to play.  My chance came when I went on vacation to my cabin with some friends.  I had the opportunity to play online.  When my wife went to bed on her birthday, I decided to enter a tournament and I came in second to win $330.  I also ran good in some SNG’s.  This is how I amassed my fortune.

So I cashed out $500 to pay for our Disneyland Annual Passes.  Now I’m back down to $500.

On top of all this, I placed 3rd in the SNG league on PokerXFactor.  No prize, but in December my return on investment for low limit SNG was 55%.

Some key factors to winning that I learned this year.

Patience and focus.  When I’m playing a tournament, I need to pay attention to what’s going on and take notes on players.  I was able to win many tournaments because I was able to exploit a player’s weaknesses, whether they played too tight or too loose.

Stop gambling.  Give up hands when you are beat.  Play the game straightforward.  And wait for actual playable hands.

Keep learning.  I can attribute my win to two sources.  www.PokerXFactor.com taught me my game.  I owe my entire strategy for SNG’s to them.  Thank you.

SNG-EGT – The key to winning an SNG is play tight, and when you’re short stacked, know when to shove and fold.  I’ve won many SNG’s when I’m down to 400 in chips and the blinds are 50/100.  Winning poker in knowing your position, properly valuing your hands and shoving at the right time.

So, it’s January 1, 2008, and I have a starting bankroll of $500.  Let’s see how far I can go this year.
