Reading Hands - Outsmarting the Loose Aggressive Player

I thought I would go over a hand that involved me and a Loose (semi-) Aggressive Player.  This was the ultimate in hand reading that I experienced in a while. I could have easily lost this hand and a lot of just too boot.

Just to set up. I’m on Full Tilt Poker and playing a $5 SNG. This is the third had and I’ve noticed that there’s a player who plays every hand and really like to scare people out of the pot.  I’ll post the hand history throughout the blog. The villain here is “daivho” and I’m on the button.

Pre-Flop

Dealt to Humble Guy [5c 5s]

daivho calls 30

CK8808 calls 30

Humble Guy calls 30

Kalvin0 checks

Pot: 135

Basically daivho (the Villain) calls. There’s another caller. I limp, the small blind folds and the big blind checks. We go in four handed and I limp. The reason I limp is basically the blinds are really small at this moment, so I don’t really want to go crazy. I’m looking for trips and if I don’t get it, I’m folding to any big bets. It’s worth risking 30 of my 1,500 chips to set mine.

All of the limping tells me at this point that no one has a premium hand at this point.

*** FLOP *** [Td 2s 7s]

Kalvin0 checks

daivho checks

CK8808 checks

Humble Guy checks

Pot: 135

Everyone checks around, which tells me two things. No one has a hand or someone is trapping. The flop is not that great for me, because there are two overcards on the flops. Of the three other players, anyone could have a 10 or a 7, but at the same time, it’s even more likely no one has anything. If someone had a 10, I’m sure they would have bet out. It’s possible that someone has a 7 and that their just scared of the 10.

I check because I really don’t want to invest any chips and have someone come over the top. I’ll take the free card hoping for trip and in the back of my mind, I’m thinking that the next round of betting will tell me a lot.

 *** TURN *** [Td 2s 7s] [3c]

Kalvin0 checks

daivho bets 150

CK8808 folds

Humble Guy calls 150

Kalvin0 folds

Pot: 435

So now the villain decides to bet 150 into a 135 pot. This is what we call an overbet.  First the 3c is a great card for me, because if no one had anything on the flop, then I certainly have the best had at this point.

Now what I know about the villain is that he’ll try to steal pots. The overbet tells me that he is trying to steal the pot and probably has nothing, which is why I called and did not raise him. My feeling was that if he had two pair like 7-3 or 10-3. He would have bet smaller to try and entice me to call.

It’s funny, but I would have folded to a smaller bet, rather than call the big bet. His bet was definitely meant to scare everyone out.

*** RIVER *** [Td 2s 7s 3c] [As]

daivho has 15 seconds left to act

daivho bets 555

Humble Guy calls 555

Pot: 1545

The Ace of Spades on the river is a scary card. He could have completed his flush or he could have the Ace. Daivho decides to overbet again; putting 555 into a 435 pot. I had to think for a moment. I still believe that the overbet means bluff.  I was thinking that if he had the Ace or the Flush, he would have gone all in. Also, I’m thinking that he could come in with any two cards, but I just don’t think he had a 10 or 7.

Finally, I decided that his bet was to get me to fold rather than get me to call.  I’m also looking at my chip stack and if I lose, I’m down to about 750 chips and it’s possible for me to come back from that. So I call crossing my fingers.

*** SHOW DOWN ***

daivho shows [4d Kc] Ace King high

Humble Guy shows [5c 5s] a pair of Fives

Humble Guy wins the pot (1,545) with a pair of Fives

Daivho shows me his K-4. Wow, what a crappy hand and what a bad investment on his part.

The worst part is that the next hand I’m dealt A-J. Daivho is in the big blind. I’m hoping that I can entice Daivho to shove all-in. He has 680 chips at this point. There’s one limper and it comes to me, so I limp too. Daivho does shove all-in and the limper calls it. I’m thinking that I’m beat at this point. So I fold, since I didn’t invest that much.

Daivho shows A-4. The limper shows K-9. Jack on the flop and I’m kicking myself. Daivho doubles up to normal chip stack and this LAG is back in the game.

As it turns out. Daivho and I make the money in this SNG. I finally take him out in 3rd place thanks to some good bubble play and then I go on to win this one.

For me this hand was all about hand reading and identifying betting patterns.

Amazing Poker Run

Needless to say this has been a good year so far in poker for me. In 2008, I was incredibly anemic and lost a little bit of my bankroll. At the beginning of the year, I was in the same place. I started with almost $400 and through a series of bad decision dropped my bankroll to $250. It was at that point that I had to get serious about my game and truly consider my game play.

My first step was to be sure that I was playing according to my bank roll. At $250 I would only play SNG’s at 5% of my bankroll. This meant that I could only play SNG’s under $2.50 buyin. The other decision I made was to stop playing turbo SNG’s. I found that at the low levels, the turbos where gambles. By the time I got to 10 big blinds and was push/fold, there were still 7 people in the game and all were playing way too tight. In the regular SNG’s the field would thin to 5 player by the time the blinds go to 50/100.

I also starting playing 3 games at a time. Playing multiple games means that I would not get bored and play hands that I shouldn’t. I was more likely to fold marginal hands because I wasn’t getting the I need to play this rush.

About two month ago, I was able to build my bankroll to $500. I withdrew $100 to celebrate my anniversary and was bankroll building again.

Then everything changed. Full Tilt is celebrating their anniversary and gave me an opportunity to earn a $100 bonus. This was two weeks ago. I’ve always hesitated trying to earn bonuses because you have to play a lot of poker to earn the bonus. Also, you have to play higher limits to earn it fast enough.

I decided to see how my limit skills are today. The last thing I need to do is lose $200 to earn a $100 bonus which is what happened in the past.

I started playing $.50/$1 limit Hold’em and Omaha H/L. I’ve gotten so much better. I started earning on average $20 a session and just earned my first $10 bonus on Monday.

The day to playing limit for me is to fold a lot in early position and stop playing fancy. Quit the hand when you know you’re beat.

Hopefully I haven’t jinxed anything by writing this but now my bankroll is over $500 (would be $600 without the withdrawal).

Two years ago I got my bankroll to $1000 (withdrew half to buy Disneyland annual passes) and have never come close. I hope this year I can repeat.

Responding to the Christian Critic

If you're new to my blog, I wrote an article on the Christian's Perspective on Playing Poker. I recently got this message from someone who disagrees with me. It's really interesting. I'm posting the entire thread here:

Your article is interesting. However, it would seem to me that you have
overlooked some principles laid down in Scripture, some of which are found in:1
Corinthians 6:12

"Everything is permissible for me"-- but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"-- but I will not be mastered by anything. (NIV) You may not be mastered but others may who follow your example. How can we face the judgment knowing we could be the cause of another's downfall because we have indulged in questiionable practices?1 Corinthians 10:23 "Everything is permissible"-- but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"-- but not everything is constructive.

(NIV)1 Corinthians 8:13
Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.

(NIV) We are not to live unto ourselves but to be a living witness to the power of Christ. I can't envision Christ sitting at a gamblers' table, taking another's money,
giving the Sermon on the Mount to those he was gambling with. Can you?

So I sent a nice polite response:

Thanks for the note. Your right, in a way. If you look at poker as gambling, then yes, you’re correct. As I mentioned in my blog about gambling, if you’re relying on fate and chance to win, you are sinning.

But in my perspective poker is a game of skill, unlike blackjack, roulette, keno, etc.

Do I see Jesus sitting at a poker table? That’s a pretty far out question? Do I see
Jesus sitting at a table and playing crazy eights, Uno or bridge? Did Jesus play
any kind of game?

My poker is limited to a $5 tournament. I play to better my game play skills and to come in first. If Jesus were to play any game, would he play to come in 1st. Would he play to less than his ability to let other’s win?

I used to play softball. I paid $30 a season in hopes of winning a cheap trophy and a t-shirt. Is this gambling? Would Jesus do the same? Honestly, I paid the $30 to be with my friends in a competitive environment and we did play to win.

Friend, I don’t want to come across as sarcastic, I know your heart’s in the right place, but what I do what to do is challenge your position a little. Believe me, I have a lot of friends, who agree with you. I also have a few friends who have succumb to the
Gambling Addiction. In fact, I had to pull a friend out of a casino that I frequent, because he should not have been there because of his addiction. I don’t take this lightly.

Hope this helps.
Alan.

Here's the fun response that I got back:

Thanks or your reply. Is how I look at a matter what counts or is it the
influence it extends that counts. The Scripture tells us that we are to
avoid even the very appearance of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:22
Abstain from all appearance of evil.) (KJV) Also, we have Exo. 20:17 to steer around if we want to gamble,or to make excuses for any other sin and vice.

I see from your blog that you claim to be an Evangelical Christian. I
am not interested in discussing that point but I am interested in knowing if you
have been "Born from above" -- truly transformed by the work of the 'Spirit
in your heart. If not, this would answer a lot of the questions as to why
you look to justify this questionable practice. this is the answer Jesus gave to the
searching Nichodemus.

I don't think this person really wanted to have a discussion about poker, so I wrote back:

Simply, Yes, I am "Born from Above" but probably not by the standards you have
set. I will leave that judgment to God.
I've not hear back from him yet.

Sometimes You're Just Meant to Lose

With the amount of poker that I play, I’m just not that into bad beat stories. Bad Beats happen all the time and you just have to live it with. If you manage your money correctly, you should be able to weather the storm. Having said this, I have a bad beat story to tell.

Whenever I have about two hours to kill, I like playing a bunch of SNG’s on Full Tilt Poker. Last night it was getting late for me and I desperately wanted to play poker. I had an hour, so I decided to play 2 SNG’s at the same time. I find that if I play several at once, I usually cash and actually make money.  In both SNG’s I was able to build my chip stack and then in all came crashing down. Let’s review both.

Sit-n-Go #1 – I’m on the 3rd level (blinds: 30/60) and I built my ship stack to 1,800 in chips. Not bad at this stage. I’m in middle position and I am dealt pocket aces. Under the Gun makes a 3x raise of 210. I raise to 450. The button then shoves All-In, UTG shoves All-in and I, of course, call with the best hand preflop. Yes, I have the best hand preflop.

The board then proceeds to show a spade four-flush and the UTG has the King of Spades.  I’m out.

I understand why the pocket Kings called, but why did the pocket 9’s shove? He was not short stacked and with two raisers up front, 9’s are just not that good.

Unless UTG put me on Aces, his call was correct. Maybe I was just not meant to win that SNG.

Sit-n-Go #2 – The second loss was worse. After the first hand I was down to 1,200 in chips. Through some great aggressive play, I built my stack to 3,000. I’m now in second place behind the chip leaders 3,115 chips.

I’m now in middle position again with one limper (blinds: 40/80). I am dealt pocket Aces again.  I make a standard raise of 280. The chip leader on the button calls and everyone else folds.

The flop comes: 8 – 3 – Ace.  Sweet I have trips. The pot is around 700. So I bet 350 as a continuation bet.  The button calls.

The turn comes: 8.  Excellent. I now have a full house: Aces over 8’s.  I check and the button bets 350. I insta-shove and the button insta-calls. He then shows me pocket 8’s. My full house is up against his quads. The river is air and I’m out and I doubled up the chip leader.

May I was just not meant to win.

I didn’t want to press my luck so I quite for the next. I was just not meant to play poker that night.

Now I need someone to come over and fix a broken window…oh and I need a new computer too.

My Great Trap: Taking Down the Bully

I have to gloat a little. I was playing a $3 Knock-Out SNG on Full Tilt. I had just doubled up when I shoved a middle position raise with pocket Kings and was called by Ace-9.  I was the chip leader at my table and then arriving on my immediate left was the player, peedplyr.

This person was playing a little tight, but whenever I would raise, peedplyr was smooth calling behind me. He would then smooth call my raises on the flop and turn, and then blast me on the river. I could have gambled against the guy and shove, but instead I chose to preserve my big stack.  I felt like this guy was intentionally picking on me since he was not playing this way against anyone else.

That is until this hand…

  1. I’m in the big blind and I’m dealt 7-6.
  2. peedplyr limps under the gun
  3. It folds around to me (small blind folds). I check. Pot is 800.
  4. Flop – 7-7-4.
  5. I flop trips. I decide to play it weak by making a half-pot size bet.
  6. I bet 400.
  7. peedplyr min raises me to 800.
  8. I min raise to 1,200. I min raise because I want it to look like I’m making a lame attempt to control the pot.
  9. peedplyr calls.
  10. Turn – Ace.
  11. I check. The ace is a great card for two reasons. I hope he has an ace and possibly flopped two pair or he decides to steal. My check on the turn was designed to tell him that I took my shot, but the ace scares me and I’m giving up.
  12. peedplyr shoves all-in.
  13. I instacall and show my trips.
  14. peedplyr shows K-Q and is drawing dead.
  15. River – 7 for quads.
  16. peedplyr is out and I’m in first place.

Sweet vindication. This trap made me feel real good. I love taking down bullies.
